上海大学是上海市属的综合性研究型大学,是教育部与上海市人民政府共建高校,是国家“211工程”重点建设高校、上海市高水平地方大学建设高校,是国家“双一流”建设高校。根据上海大学“十四五”事业发展规划和2035 年远景目标纲要,学校将在 2025 年整体进入中国一流大学行列,并力争到2035 年建成与上海城市地位相匹配、世界一流、特色鲜明的综合性研究型大学。

上海大学外国语学院发轫于1922年中国共产党成立的第一所正规高等学府上海大学的英国文学系(1923年建系,首任系主任何世桢),1995年成立外国语学院。2005年获批上海市本科教育高地,2006年教育部英语专业评估获评优秀,2007年获批全国大学英语教学改革示范点,2010年获批外国语言文学一级学科硕士学位点(目前下设外国语言学及应用语言学、外国文学与比较文学、翻译与国际传播、国别与区域研究4个学科方向)和翻译专业硕士学位点(MTI,英语笔译、日语笔译、法语笔译),2014年获批二级交叉学科博士点“语言文化与世界文明”,2022年英语专业获批国家级一流本科专业建设点。现每年招收海内外博士生3-5名、硕士生200余名。在本科层次上,学院现设有英语、日语和法语三个语种专业,每年本科招生80余名。

学院学科及师资力量雄厚,现有专任教师131名,其中教授21名(包括特聘教授1名;二级教授2名,三级教授3名;上海市浦江人才3名),副教授30名,具有博士学位的教师占47%,海外学习经历的占95%以上。2018-2023年获国家社科基金立项35 项(其中重大2项、重点2项),省部级及横向项目34项,SSCI、A&HCI、CSSCI等期刊论文400余篇,专/译/编著百余部。学院承办CSSCI期刊《上海翻译》(1986年创刊)。

外国语学院历代学人和历届学子筚路蓝缕,奋力拼搏,取得了令人瞩目的成就,多人荣获宝钢奖,上海市育才奖,上海市白玉兰奖,上海市浦江人才称号,上海大学伟长学者称号,翻译文化终身成就奖,法兰西学术棕榈骑士勋章;多人在教书育人、科研攻关中荣获省部级教学成果奖,省部级以上哲学社会科学优秀成果奖。学院本硕博学生在各类全国性学科竞赛中屡创佳绩,每年都有学生斩获包括“大学生创新创业大赛”、“外研社杯”全国大学生英语演讲/辩论/写作/阅读大赛、“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛、全国大学生英语竞赛、“CASIO杯”中国日语专业本科生/研究生日语竞赛等赛事的各类奖项,展现学院人才培养结出了累累硕果。

学院设有校级研究中心7个,院级研究中心8个以及1个MTI教育中心,覆盖外国文学、外国语言学、话语修辞、外语教育、外语写作、翻译、海派文化及国别与区域研究等领域。各类研究中心推动了学院与美国、英国、加拿大、澳大利亚、德国、法国、意大利、日本、韩国等国的国际交往和学术交流,与美国雪城大学、韦恩州立大学、澳大利亚麦考瑞大学、爱尔兰科克大学、大阪大学、千叶大学、九州大学、大阪市立大学、富山大学、广岛市立大学、武藏野大学、神田外国语大学、香川大学、大正大学、法国里昂三大开展国际合作项目与交换生项目。

学院遵循国家“新文科”建设和发展理念,不断探索“外语+中华/海派文化+信息技术+国际传播”的学科融合发展途径,着力培养具有全球视野和符合新时代中国特色社会主义现代化建设发展需要的高层次“大外语”人才。

Briefing on School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University

In 1922, the Communist Party of China established its first higher education institution — Shanghai University. The following year witnessed the founding of the Department of English Literature with He Shizhen (1895-1972) as its head. With the department as the predecessor, the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University then began its evolution. In 1995, the School of Foreign Languages was formally founded. In 2005, SFL was bestowed by Shanghai Education Commission a key project for developing its English undergraduate program. In 2006, the subject of English was rated Class A in the National Evaluation for English Undergraduate Program. SFL was then awarded the honorable title of “The National Model of College English Teaching Reform” in 2007. In 2010, SFL was authorized to offer a master program of the first-level discipline in Foreign Language and Literature (including 4 sub-fields: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature, Translation and Dissemination of Chinese Culture, and Country and Area Studies) and to award master’s degrees in Translation and Interpreting (MTI in English, Japanese and French). In 2014, SFL was authorized to offer a doctoral program of the second-level disciplines in Language Culture and World Civilization. At present, 3-5 doctoral students and more than 180 postgraduate students are enrolled from both domestic and international sources annually. For undergraduate programs, the School now offers courses in English, Japanese and French. The enrollment of undergraduate students reaches 80 every year.

The faculty includes 131 full-time teachers, among which there are 21 professors and 30 associate professors. 47% of the faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees, and more than 95% of the teachers have the experience of advanced education overseas. From 2018 to 2023, SFL has undertaken 35 projects of the National Social Science Fund of China (including 2 major projects and 2 key projects), and 34 provincial-level and horizontal scientific research projects. In the past five years, teachers and researchers of SFL have published more than 400 papers on SSCI, A&HCI, CSSCI or other important journals, as well as more than 100 monographs and translation works. SFL professors have chief-edited the CSSCI journal —Shanghai Journal of Translators (founded in 1986).

SFL has 7 university-level research centers, 6 school-level research centers and 1 MTI education center, covering a wide range of research fields that include foreign literature, foreign linguistics, discourse analysis and rhetoric studies, foreign language education, creative writing in foreign languages, translation and interpreting, Hai Pai culture, and international and regional studies. These research centers have promoted academic exchanges with universities in countries including US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Cooperate programs and exchange programs have also been implemented with Syracuse University, Wayne State University, Macquarie University, University College Cork, Osaka University, Kyushu University, University of Toyama, Hiroshima City University, Musashino University, Kanda University of International Studies, Kagawa University and Taisho University.

Years of effort has yielded remarkable results in education and academics proved by the “Baosteel Education Awards”, Shanghai “Yucai Awards”, Shanghai “Magnolia Gold Award”, Shanghai “Pujiang Talent Program Award” won by the faculty members, the recruited scholars in Weichang Scholars Program of Shanghai University, Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation, and Remise de I’insignede Chevalier des Palmes Académiques. A number of teachers have received provincial-level teaching achievement awards, as well as philosophy and social science achievement awards above the provincial level.

SFL students have competed vigorously and won awards in multiple national competitions including the China International College Students’ ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the “FLTRP Cup” English Contests, the “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition, the National English Competition for College Students, the “CASIO Cup” National Japanese Competition for College Students.

Applying the national development philosophy of constructing “New Liberal Arts”, SFL, by vigorously exploring the interdisciplinary development of integrating foreign languages, Chinese and Hai Pai Culture, information technology and international communication, will focus on cultivating talents with global vision and professional competence, and prepare them for serving the needs of building socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era.
